Location
You can use either Current Location or search for any city. Search does not need location permission, so the whole app works with location turned off — pick a city and everything (forecast, UVA Context, sun timing) uses that place and its local time zone. If you do allow location access, Beyond UV uses it only while the app is open. To review permission later, open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Beyond UV.
Searching for a place — selecting Dubai while you are in Los Angeles, say — uses Dubai’s coordinates and Dubai’s local solar time for the forecast and the UVA Context curve.
What is the UVA Context?
The UVA Context is Beyond UV’s own forecast-based score for expected UVA conditions. It combines the hourly UV forecast with the Sun’s position, the season, and your elevation to show how UVA conditions are likely to change through the day. It is not the official Global Solar UV Index, a direct measurement of UVA, or a measurement of your personal UV exposure. It is a planning guide. Full methodology is in the app under Settings → How the UVA Context works.
Where does forecast data come from?
Beyond UV gets the hourly UV Index forecast from Apple Weather through Apple’s WeatherKit framework, using the coordinates of your selected place. The UVA Context is then calculated on your device. If a forecast cannot be retrieved, the app shows an approximate on-device clear-sky estimate based on the Sun’s position; that fallback does not account for clouds, haze, ozone, or local weather, and it is labelled in the app when shown.
If conditions are not refreshing
- Check that your device has an internet connection.
- Confirm that Beyond UV can use location, or search for a city instead.
- Close and reopen the app, then try again.
